We are delighted to share that Abingdon House School’s very own Eddie has won the Equals magazine Harry Hewitt Memorial Prize for 2024. Published by The Mathematical Association, Equals is dedicated to mathematics education and inclusion with a particular focus on SEN. The prize recognises outstanding progress made by a student in overcoming barriers to learning in maths.

Before joining Abingdon House School, Eddie experienced acute anxiety and fear around mathematics. This posed a significant barrier to his engagement with the subject. With support from our multi-disciplinary team of SaLTs, OTs, SENCos, teachers and TAs, Eddie has worked hard to overcome these barriers, and has made significant progress to succeed in, and actually enjoy, his maths lessons. A large part of this has been the use of strategies and teaching techniques which foster a supportive and positive classroom environment, where mistakes are seen as an inevitable, and ultimately useful part of learning.

Eddie’s progress in overcoming these barriers has extended beyond the maths classroom, and this award also recognises the significant emotional and social development which has gone hand-in-hand with his academic progress. You can read the full article on the Equals website, here.
