At our Prep School, we pride ourselves in offering a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. Rooted in the core subjects of English and maths, our curriculum is enhanced by a fully integrated therapeutic approach, making it accessible to learners at all levels whether they are academically in line with, behind, or ahead of chronological expectations.
Our approach specifically addresses the unique challenges students with SEN often face in mainstream education. By focusing on removing barriers to learning, we create an environment where every student can achieve meaningful outcomes.
Our curriculum caters for those who are working academically between Reception and Year 9 covering English, maths, science, humanities, IT, music, art, PE, games as well as designated academic intervention slots and reading periods each day.
A mainstream structure with therapeutic support
While we follow a traditional timetable, it is supplemented with essential therapeutic lessons that focus on life skills, social interaction, fine motor skills, and targeted interventions. This combination ensures that our students not only develop academically but also grow in their personal and social abilities.
Engaging learning through themes and multisensory teaching
Our thematic and multisensory approach brings learning to life. By connecting subjects through central themes, students have greater opportunities for engagement and connection to the topic, while gaining a deeper understanding of the material. This method fosters independence and helps students become enthusiastic, self-driven learners.
In Year 1, for example, the theme ‘Antarctic adventure’ tied together multiple subjects. In science, pupils learned about seasons and how weather changes. In English, they retold Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers, a story that explores contrasting environments like hot and cold. Meanwhile, in art lessons, they created collages representing the Antarctic, using a variety of materials to capture the icy landscape.
In Year 6, the theme ‘Secrets of the Sarcophagus’ delved into Ancient Egypt. In English, pupils wrote an explanation of the burial and mummification process and composed a first-person account of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. In art, they learned all about the visual culture of the time by recreating painted Egyptian art and hieroglyphs.
Curriculum beyond the classroom
We believe in expanding education beyond the classroom. Special dates like World Book Day and Science Week provide focused opportunities to celebrate learning in creative ways. We also host a range of Equality & Diversity afternoons throughout the year which integrate classroom and cultural activities for the likes of Black History Month, Pride, and International Women’s Day.
Making the most of our location
Situated in central London, we take full advantage of the city’s rich cultural offerings. Regular trips to museums, exhibitions, theatrical productions, and music events enrich students’ learning experience. Throughout the year, we also invite guest speakers and host workshops that align with our curriculum, offering students a dynamic, real-world connection to their studies.
